It was a beautiful day to hike about 4 miles around the Albuquerque volcanoes. A great winter hike when the weather is fairly warm and calm. Carol & Bob Diggelman were the hike leaders for this hike.

The day was sunny and in the upper 30’s.  The entrance to the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, formerly home of the dairy farmer, is now on the north side of the building.  The refuge development is ongoing and the traffic is rerouted.

A group of five walked on the trails along the Piedras Marcadas escarpment: Kathleen Rhoad, Nancy O’Dononhue, Susan Cote, Scott Lake and Carolyn Brown. It was a sunny day and petroglyphs were easy to spot.

Six hikers (Pam Bliss, leader, Tom Dorr, Scott Lake, Carol Moss, Nancy O’Donohue, Carl) joined together on a humid but not too warm of a morning. The hike was changed not once but twice to accommodate trail and weather conditions. Because large sections of the forest along the Oso Corredor trail have been bulldozed as a fire-prevention measure, and because a thick cloud bank was sitting on the crest, we ended up hiking a loop of the Armijo-Faulty-Cienega trails on the lower east side of the Sandias.  On view were late summer flowers, assorted mushrooms, and a medallion tree marked … Read the rest

Saturday, April 13 was cool, with intermittent sunshine and cloudy w/ rain in the forecast.  Group of 6, Carol & Bob Diggelman, leaders, Tom Dorr, Cheri Plavnick, Kathleen Rhoad and Bob Haladay were interested to learn from leader Bob that Golden is Albuquerque’s first Open Space, formerly 1,200 acre parcel of BLM land in Sandoval County, acquired in 1964 under the federal Recreation and Public Purposes Act, which required that it be developed for recreational purposes.

It was a very nice day for a hike in the foothills. It was a almost steady climb to our objective, the Old Man Rocks. The group, numbering about 16, past a number of other interesting rock formations. There was still snow and ice about but fortunately no serious slippery spots. The Old Man is located at the edge of an arroyo that drops of to the valley below. May be quit a sight after a heavy rain.

Hello all,

Was a splendid day for a walk at Valle de Oro, from now on to be known at the “Eagle Hike” since again this year we saw eagles, 2 up from 1 last year.  Thanks for the sharp eyes.  We also saw dozens of Sandhill Cranes, hundreds of Canada and Snow Geese, a Coopers Hawk, a Swainson’s Hawk, a Flicker, lots of crows.
