It was a beautiful fall day as we set out for a short hike and then lunch (for some) at the Village Pizza. Along the way we got some good views of the Sandia Mountains across the Rio Grande. We spotted cranes on the wing and in an orchard near our return point. Unfortunately the cranes were to far away for pictures.… Read the rest

On February 10 we had a wonderful day at Bosque del Apache with a small group of UU hikers: Kathleen Rhoad, leader, Ken Callahan, Virginia Burris, Amy Carpenter, Phyllis Bergman and Gary Donnermeyer. We drove through the refuge and saw 2 Bald Eagles, 2 Kestrels, hundreds of Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese, Pin-tail ducks, Coots, Wild Turkeys. Plus a Mule Deer, a buck.
We hiked the 2.2 mile Canyon National Recreation Trail which starts in Solitude Canyon and climbs to a mesa top with an excellent refuge-encompassed vista. There is a guide at the trailhead that corresponds to 24 numbered … Read the rest
Hello all,
We had a big group of 18 for the Valle de Oro hike. For most it was their first visit to this relatively new wildlife refuge in the South Valley. Tom Dorr was the leader and the hike started in the bosque with a good look at the Rio Grande. Then we walked on the road by the levee. We saw many, many Canada Geese, Sandhill Cranes, a Flicker, Kestrel, a Great Blue Heron and a Bald Eagle soaring above us. Tom really liked seeing an eagle again as he had seen one a few days earlier.

Tom Dorr led the hike with 5 other hikers. This is one of the hikes that the group takes this time of year and is a favorite for many hikers. The trails here are usually very busy this time of year specially on weekends. The color on the maples (Bigtooth Maple) this year was good but lots of leaves had already fallen. The day was cool and clear. Great hiking weather, not to warm. We took the 4th of July Trail to its end and then on to the base of Mosca Peek. We returned the same route.

Great day for a hike. The weather was great for the ascent and we found a wonderful place to have lunch at the crest. This hike offers an easy ascent even thought the elevation gain is about 1000 feet (starting at 8500 feet). As you can see we were seven in number – Scott Lake (Leader) Ken Callahan, Bob Liebman, Brian Hill, Theresa Watson, John Kwait and Camilla Haneberg.
There are not many good overlooks (view points) until the crest is reached. A good portion of the trail is well shaded by conifers and there were many wild flowers. Scarlet … Read the rest
The hike to the hot (warm) spring is a fairly strenuous climb but we all made it just fine. Tom Dorr led the hike. The day was warm and fair, and there were many hikers on the trail. This is open forest with good shade most of the way. There are a few nice views of the surrounding mountains along the trail.
There are in fact large numbers of obsidian boulders. The small pieces I found, unfortunately, had many impurities.

On April 8, 2017, Theresa Watson led a group of 8 on the White Mesa Bike Trails hike on BLM land near the Ojito Wilderness: Cheri Plavnick, Dawn Leach, Jane Knapp, Bob Diggelman, Carol Moss, Gary Donnermeyer, Camilla Haneberg and Theresa Watson. Camilla said: “The hike was lots of steep ups and downs, as advertised. The views were great and it was very much worth the effort.”
Theresa reported that it got windy after lunch and the group really liked the challenge of it – the scrambling and remarked on the gorgeous scenery.
Thanks, Theresa! You got rave reviews as … Read the rest
