Storms Over the Jemez (Kathleen)

On Sat, March 12 a group of 13 First Unitarians and friends hiked La Bajada Loop, about 4 miles taking about 4 hours: Scott Lake, Dave Colton, Helene Kiecolt & Tony, Ed O’Connor, Judith Parsons & Bruce Newton, Don Sarver, Bob & Carol Diggelman, Diana & Bob Hayes and Kathleen Rhoad, leader. The first 1.8 mile is pretty strenuous, up La Bahada Hill to the top of the 500′ volcanic escarpment with views of the Santa Fe River in the canyon, and the Sandias. Once on top of Mesa Negra there are great views of the Jemez, Tetilla Peak, Santa Fe Baldy and Truchas Peaks. Along with cattle.

The day started out sunny and warm at 10 am and by lunch the views to the west and south showed that the weather was about to change. The group collected quickly to walk briskly on the second leg of the hike. It got cloudy, very windy and the temp dropped to 50. Some of us were dressed for the warmer temps but with all of the exertion we were ok. The worst part was the dusty wind and very fortunately it did not rain until we were on our way back on I-25.

Thanks to enthusiastic, appreciative hikers one and all! Photos provided by Kathleen Rhoad and Scott Lake.
