Rio Grande Bosque – Saturday February 8th, 2014

Kathleen Rhoad led this hike on a beautifully warm winter day. There were lots of birds on the river enjoying the day as well. Many Canada Geese, gulls, Mallards, Flickers, Hawks (Sharp-Shinned), a juvenile Eagle (Bald?), Black Phoebes and Juncos. We also spotted a Porcupine.  We walkled north along the river to the Sandia Reservation fence and then back by the levee. Bosque hikers: Kathleen Rhoad, Scott Lake, Dawn Leach, Rick Held, Pam Bliss, Heather Gram.

Corrales Ditch – Saturday December 7, 2013

Five First Unitarians, Pam Bliss, Rick Held, Nancy Carrillo, Dave and Kathleen arrived on time to pop into the Craft Fair in the Old San Isidro Church before we set out walking north along the Corrales ditch on a wintry, cloudy day w/ Sandias shrouded in fog. (Not the best light for photographs.) No wind. Temps in the 40’s. We were joined by Neal & Audrey MacDonald and Johanne Ledger for part of the return walk.

We were happy to arrive at the fire in the outdoor horno at the entrance of Casa San Isidro and were welcomed by Manuel … Read the rest

Bosque del Apache – Saturday November 9, 2013

Pam Bliss, Bob Haladay and Kathleen Rhoad hiked the 2.3 mile Canyon Trail (http://www.fws.gov/refuge/Bosque_del_Apache/) approaching dusk in Bosque del Apache on Sat, Nov 9, 2013. The light was autumn magical with views of the wetlands in the bosque. We were late arriving on the viewing platform for the fly in but still got to see many waves of Sandhill cranes landing on the water. Bob liked their overlapping songs.

Kathleen provided the images.… Read the rest

El Malpais NM – Bluffs and La Ventana – Saturday October 19, 2013

Kathleen Rhoad led this hike. It was a beautiful day for a hike and this area is well worth the drive. In general the terrain offers an easy to moderate hike, depending on the length of the hike. There are wonderful sandstone formations, an extensive lava field, and a natural arch with petroglyphs near by. We also paid a visit to La Ventana arch. For more information click here. And to view the scouting hike Pam and Scott went on last Feb. click here.

Fenton Lake – Saturday August 10, 2013

Pam Bliss was our hike leader. The original hike, Cave Creek Trail, is closed because of the Pecos fires earlier this summer. After driving into the Jemez, we found that the alternative hike, Battleship Rock to McCauley Springs Trail, was closed due to flash flood danger. So we seven hikers—Scott Lake, Kathleen Rhoad, Bob Haladay, Bob Liebman, Heather Gram, Liz Davidson, and Pam Bliss — winged it and went to Fenton Lake State Park. Walked for about 2.5 miles through a lovely mountain valley of the Rio Cebolla. Saw wetlands, wildflowers, cattails, a swimming critter (muskrat? beaver), and jays, and … Read the rest

Tree Spring Trail – Saturday June 8, 2013

There were 6 hikers (Scott Lake, Pam Bliss, Kathleen Rhoad, Heather Gram, Eliza and Mymm Ackley)  on this beautiful day, two days before the Sandia trails were closed due to fire danger. The trail head is near the Ski Area. It is a fairly gradual but constant clime toward the crest. It is well shaded for the most part with few rocky spots that present challenges. This is a great trail for a shorter day hike, well worth the travel and effort. We hiked to the crest and ate lunch near an overlook of Albuquerque. It does intersect the Crest … Read the rest

La Bajada – Saturday April 13, 2013

This hike was led by Kathleen Rhoad. The weather was perfect and the hike up the old US 66 route was an easy climb. Pictures contributed by Rick Held.

Here is a description of La Bajada from a government document:
